Summary
Loudon Park is a popular spot year-round for swimming, various paddling sports, walking, and fishing. The proposed building provides storage facilities for the Nanaimo Canoe and Kayak Club and Nanaimo Rowing Club and a washroom for the public park. The visual impact of the building in this park setting is minimized by using natural materials, nestling the building in between the large, existing trees, and inserting the building into the sloping hillside. The boat storage areas are partially buried and flanked by perforated screen façades. We developed two options that focus on the materiality of the screens: a more robust brick option and a slightly less robust but less expensive vertical wood option.
